Open Enrollment Deadlines
Any parent or guardian that is considering the use of the open enrollment option in any public school district in the state of Iowa other than your district of residency should be aware of the following dates:
March 1 is the last date for regular open enrollment requests for the following school year. September 1 is the last date for an open enrollment request for kindergarten students starting school.
If any of the good cause circumstances listed below occur after March 1, any parent or guardian may file a late open enrollment application.
Good cause relates to two general areas defined by the law:
a) If there has been a change in the status of the pupil’s resident district. An example would be a change in the whole grade sharing arrangement, a reorganization proposal, and dissolution of an agreement or rejection of whole grade sharing with an area district.
b) A change in the resident of the student; for example, change in pupil’s marital status, a guardianship change, placement in foster care, adoption or participation in a health treatment program.
Parents or guardians of open enrollment students whose income falls below 160% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for transportation assistance. This may be in the form of actual transportation or in the form of a cash stipend.
Parents who apply for open enrollment should be aware of the potential loss of eligibility rules in the district for which they enroll.
Parents or guardians are no longer required to renew open enrollment requests. Children will remain in open enrollment status unless the parent or guardian decides to cancel it in which the agreement would be terminated. This may be a result of the parent moving, or not sending the child to the requested district for whatever reason.
If you have questions regarding this, please contact the Superintendent’s Office in the district in which you are planning to enroll from.
